Student Profile: Joseph Wallace

Joseph Wallace

What, and where, are you studying?

I’ve just graduated from Newport Film School doing a degree in Animation.

What are the best features about your institution?

Its dedicated tutors, the creative freedom inherent in the course alongside a hearty dose of academic research and questioning. There’s a real emphasis on the possibilities that animation has as an art form and I think the best films that tend to come out of the course have a strong sense of storytelling and design.

How would you describe yourself to a potential employer in ten words or less?

Ambitious, creative, passionate, dedicated, inventive.

Which could you live without: Facebook or Twitter?

Wish I didn’t have to live with either.

What software do you use?

As little as possible but Dragon Stop Motion, After Effects, Final Cut.

How would you describe your style?

Driven by storytelling, whatever the medium, hopefully it’s inventive, playful and able to take viewers to imaginative worlds.

If you had to show one piece of work to a potential employer what would it be (include a brief description of how you made it)?

Probably The Man Who Was Afraid of Falling, which is my graduation film. It’s a four and a half minute long stop-motion film about an old man whose life is turned upside down after he sees a plant pot fall from his window. It was made over a period of around eight months at Newport Film School, was very ambitious and it was only me and another student Emma-Rose Dade working on the project full-time although I worked with a larger crew who contributed to other aspects of the production.

What websites do you visit daily to find inspiring new work or industry news?

Nothing daily. For animation-related stuff I look at Imagine, Motionographer, Cartoon Brew etc but I tend to be more inspired by things outside animation. I use Google Reader to follow various blogs in the fields of illustration, photography, book design, antiques and painting.

What would your dream job in the industry be?

I’d like to be able to carry on making work in film and animation, theatre and illustration. The best way of describing what I do is as a storyteller but mostly in the real world this manifests itself as director.

Name a fellow student or upcoming filmmaker who you think will be one to watch?

Péter Vácz is a good friend of mine from Hungary, we studied together on the Animation Sans Frontieres production course last year. He’s very versatile and has a unique style and approach. He’s doing his MA at MOME in Budapest currently and some of his work can be seen on his website here petervacz.daportfolio.com.

Name one technology you couldn’t live without and why?

Computers in general; although I hate being a slave to technology, they are very useful. I love the idea that anyone can make a feature film from their laptop.

What’s your idea of a good night out?

Drinks on the veranda, Danish people, Romanian bears.
